Kitsilano on a Low Tide
Posted by Susana Roque on Sunday, April 2, 2023,
I am putting together a photo album of Kitsilano Beach on a low tide
( in Vancouver 2022) It's a historical project for people who live in
Vancouver that enjoy going to the beach and for tourists or anyone
interested in Vancouver. the pictures show you just how different
Kitsilano looks with\ less water at the beach and you are able to see
a lot of what is underneath the water in Kits Beach.

Here are some photo stills from this project.
I hope you will like this series. The pictures came unexpected as I looked into chrysanthemum bush. I came closer and closer to see that as the leaves were changing colours and textures the movement and contrasts looked very beautiful. So, I took pictures. To my surprise, when I developed my pictures, there is quite a bit to see.

I have a lot of pages of photography in my document for the project that I am making. You'll never guess how many. Luckily, it's really easy to scroll fast from the very bottom to the top of the document to figure out how to align these images for the story.. I am still sad about the passing of my uncle when I think about it but obviously I don't feel the same as when I began creating the story with the poetry and the pictures. I am still interested in the subject of death, memory and loss i...

This photography installation is a mural about a boat and the sea and
has twelve abstract photographs from underneath the boat that I took in
Jericho Beach Vancouver in May 2017.
The waves and the movements they make on the edge of the shore
certainly do create pictures on the surface of objects there. Over time,
the end result of their movements is that they usually break things
apart that are not of the sea and surrender them on the sand. This
persistent process of renewal can be ver...

I am really glad that i found this boat at Jericho Beach. Initially, when I thought about writing t

I don't think I will be writing about him but I definitely know iI will include this boat into the story. I am pulled in by it.

murals
We put mural installations up on a wall as an act of
remembrance. Traditionally, they have been used in the urban landscape
for historical or political reasons. Murals bring our personal ideas
into the collective memory in the public sphere. People want to remember
a part of themselves in public and speak about it. Nobody wants to be
anonymous to themselves or to others in what is around them since it is a
form of estrangement. We are a part of the buildings and objects

Love. I made it when I was 18 years old at Laval University and had to say in my down on a Friday night because I had a sprained ankle. I wanted to go out dancing instead. It was interrupted with my friend from down the hall coming to her room in a wheel chair with a security guard bringing here in. She had fainted at the door of the residence hoping her boyfriend would take her into her arms until he brought her into her room. Wishful thinking.

Opening up a sketchbook is an adventure to enter into the imagnination
to see this world in another way. Each image is a door representing a
community and knowledge to learn and grow. Images and the dialogue they

Pictures can uplift us to recreate ourselves and our ideas to a place of

I don't know how the pictures will turn out after each photo shoot at the beach. I usually find surprises I never thought I would find. I am finding it challenging to not repeat what I thought has been working for me so far so as to not make the story redundant...I hope these pictures will be able to help me to think...

What do you see when you open a sketchbook ?
Is it a history book, a diary or a quiet promise of something new that is coming in the world that has not yet come, a present of some sort ? With enough courage, I suppose scribbles do unfold valiantly and give a new shape to this world. Perhaps, it is the idea that something new come out of nowhere and that it renews us that fascinates us.

not just a rock
or a period on the earth
rather, a possibility and beginning
to be unearthed, excavated and held
as it spins with everything else
into the determined and unperceived throbbing
of the script of a flock of particles into form
meeting in one gaze
as our hearts' and God's meet

Simba
Posted by Susana Roque on Monday, April 27, 2015,
This poem is about the death of my tabby cat friend Simba.
I was unable to save him from the strong coyotes outside.
Love is small spurts
like a sprinkler
or a small firework
chubby, with one fang, a crooked tail and no nails
from no special caste you came, grey and white
jumping so freely
like a small dolphin coming to kiss my hand
with a splash
a small push on my hand
with a sound of innocence that had no boundaries of definition
an unobstructed voice piercing through like a ray of light

Inside the heart of our silence, we can hear a bird singing on a tree as if it were a part of ourselves with an innocence that is as clear as crystal. Without speaking, they teach us what we can become. Animals connect us to parts of ourselves, angles that do not always have a voice or a definition yet,but always remind us that the best of who we are does not necessarily have any limitations. The life that supports our breath, one after the other, is brilliant. It leaves masterpies in abundance. This creative symphony which is moving everywhere without a trace is backed up by an imagination which teaches us to love and care for what we see and enjoy it. It leaves its memories, on the surface of the earth, in the spirit of play.

Susana Roque: Why we should talk about the JPEG in the arts

A JPEG doesn’t
seem to represent art. At first, it seems like the JPEG is so
insignificant that we should really laugh if anybody ever talks about it
in an artistic setting. After all, isn’t it just a medium to transport
our ideas from one place to another, a modern-day quipu with pixels
acting as knots, transferring our art into the digital landsc...

intersection: This picture is from a series of photographs that were taken on a seemingly "empty" lot in the intersection of Burrard and 4th street in Vancouver. I tried to find poetry and meaning along the edge of the wall of the building beside the lot, right along were the bushes were growing against. The picture is also influenced by abstract expressionism, arte povera and earth art.
This picture is at an intersection between the chaos and unrestricted growth in nature and the predictabil...
